  • Honestly, I don’t understand the outrage with Flip. It’s nice when a comedian can slip a message in their stand-up, but at the end of the day, comedians aren’t here to be social commentators. Their main job is to make us laugh. It’s possible to do both and few can really master that art. You can be more “woke” than the average comedic, but if you’re not funny, what’s the point?

  • I thought you meant real *drugs* ! Weed, coke, hash? That's baby food. 😄 For me Filp's comedy didn't stand the test of time. I watch reruns of Flip's show today and it's corny; I watch reruns of Red, Richard, Eddie, Dave and it's as funny today as the 1st time I heard it. But I do remember everyone stopping to watch the Flip Wilson Show, those were good times! And Geraldine was soooo funny to me as a child!

    • @Big Tex Yup, but then again, that probably would've come across as Redd Foxx being arrogant even though it was probably true at that time but Hollywood executives thought Redd's comedy was too RAW for TV back then anyway! But it showed Redd Foxx was THE MAN on the Stand-up circuit & his word held weight!

  • What ended Filp Wilson's career? "Geraldine." His paying audience, Caucasians, only wanted to see Geraldine. Mr. Wilson refused to continue playing the role and wanted only to continue in comedy as himself (A Man). He was then rejected by paying audiences (Caucasians), stages, tv and movie producers.

  • He was a "blacc" male and therefore was given the ultimatum, "the dress deal." He agreed to the deal, like so many other "blacc" comedians and received success in exchange. All "blacc" male comedians haven't done this, but many have, too many. I've witnessed Justin Timberlake put on the dress in the name of comedy also, so on and so forth. No male is safe from "the dress deal" obviously. However there are other deals that are also bad, like what Denzel did for 'Training Day', & what Haile Berry did for 'Monster's Ball'....

  • Clerow "Flip" Wilson Jr. (December 8, 1933 - November 25, 1998) was an American comedian and actor best known for his television appearances during the late 1960s and 1970s. From 1970 to 1974, Wilson hosted his own weekly variety series The Flip Wilson Show, and introduced viewers to his recurring character Geraldine. The series earned Wilson a Golden Globe and two Emmy Awards, and it was the second highest-rated show on network television for a time. Wilson was the first African American to host a successful TV variety show.In January 1972, Time magazine featured Wilson's image on its cover and named him "TV's first black superstar." He released a number of comedy albums in the 1960s and 1970s and won a Grammy Award for his 1970 album The Devil Made Me Buy This Dress. The Flip Wilson Show aired through 1974, generating high ratings and popularity among viewers and winning strong critical acclaim, with eleven Emmy Award nominations during its run, winning two.
